Anterograde amnesia is almost always biogenic (biologically caused), although I recognize this movie could be about the rare rare rare exception to that. The kind of hippocampus damage that produces anterograde amnesia doesn't change how one remembers the past. Considering how accurately the story depicts anterograde amnesia otherwise, I have trouble believing the writer got that wrong. So I just don't have an opinion. I don't think it's all "how you look at it," though. The writer does seem to have a firmly fixed backstory, whatever it is.
