here's why Open Your Eyes is a better film (though i still think Vanilla Sky was very good). In Vanilla Sky, when the "glitch" happens, and he sees juli's face instead of sofia, it makes it seem as if he's just going crazy, and that because he is going crazy, he is seeing her face and not sofia while it really is sofia. in Open Your Eyes, he is not seeing nuria/juli because he is going crazy, he is seeing her because there is a glitch in his virtual reality/dream that is causing sofia to be replaced by nuria/juli.
my other big complaint with Vanilla Sky is at the very end of the movie, when he is given the choice to jump off of the building and wake up, or continue his "lucid dream." the psychiatrist is telling him that it is not a dream, that it is reality. but the "tech support" asks the psychiatrist what the names of his 2 daughters are and he doesn't know. so basically tom cruise's character knows for sure right then that it really is the dream that the tech support is talking about and not reality. what i loved so much about Open Your Eyes was the fact that he did not know for sure. one guy was telling him that it was a dream, the psychiatrist was telling him that it was reality, so he wasn't completely sure what to believe.
one more small tiny little complaint.... in the end, when he is on top of the building and we see Sofia, i can't stand what she is wearing. in Open Your Eyes she is wearing this beautiful flowing white dress and looks almost angelic. it fits perfectly with the ending of the movie. what she is wearing in Vanilla Sky just doesn't work.
OK....that was entirely too long a post so i'll shut up now. though i've complained about a few things, i really do like vanilla sky.
