I like Janeane Garofalo and I remember in 1997 she did an HBO special where she talked glowingly of "Chasing Amy." The audience went wild when this film was mentioned. Then she was in "Dogma" a few months later. I think that Janeane was right, though, when she said that the film reached a demographic that never gets noticed- the cigarette smoking, comic book types.
While I sort of agree with that, I don't think that the creators of "Chasing Amy" had some master plan to target one demographic. I think that they want every project to be successful and for everyone to like it. If they don't, that's okay. But what I really like about Kevin's films is that they don't dumb down the audience and they are written very intelligently. Yeah, there are a lot of vulgar jokes and silly shit amongst all the dialogue, but the appeal is the reality of the films. I'm not saying that all of them are 100% realistic, but it addresses most people who don't live in California or New York.
I'm probably not making a lot of sense here, but I think Janeane really was on to something. She gets a lot of shit thrown at her by the Hollywood elite because she doesn't look like Julia Roberts or kiss their ass. But she is one of my favorites. How about you all?
