I think the ease and cheapness of shooting digital will surely help a lot of poorly-funded but talented folks get their stuff out there (see that Jordy fellow who Lynch is giving a forum to on Angry Naked Pat- that's one hell of a funny and incredibly talented dude), but it will also allow a lot of untalented bozos to make "films" and flood festival submission committees with them.

The same thing happened with 16mm films after the "oom" of 16mm indie hits (EL MARIACHI, CLERKS) in the early-to-mid 90s, festival submissions went through the roof and most of that stuff was really horrible crap. Digital will only make that worse even as it allows truly talented folks to have a vehicle to show their talent. It's like writing a novel- just because anybody can afford to buy a word processor and Microsoft Word, does that mean anybody can become a best-selling (or even simply published) novelist? No. I don't understand this mindset that just because filmmaking is now cheap "anybody can do it". There's still talent to consider.

: ...maybe I've totally missed it in the past, but what do you think of the accessability and relative ease of digital filmmaking? Does it allow a lot of undiscovered auteurs a chance to show their stuff, or is it just flooding an already overcrowded feeding frenzy with more crap?
