I honestly think there's a lot less Tolkien fans out there than Tolkien fans think there are. Granted, I'm sure it'll do just fine at the box office... but... Harry Potter was fueled by kids loving it and dragging their folks along multiple times. Ep 1 was fueled by adults remembering the old films and figuring it was worth bringing their kids multiple times.
Tolkien doesn't cross like that. His strange obsessiveness isn't the light-hearted child-friendly obsessiveness of Potter... nor does the film have a Lucas sort of gargantuan push in a "if you don't see this movie, you won't be able to talk to other people about it and be ostrizied from society" kind of way either.
It's a 'net darling that'll make money... but a case of net buzz being far overinflated in relation to real-world buzz... because it's not fantasy in the light kind of way like Potter, in the "oh you CAN know every detail but knowing the jist'll do". This is Lord of the Rings, the bookseries that created Dungeons and Dragons for Christ's sake.
It's just not accessable enough to be a true monster.
