He still didn't know who Bethany was. She was the last scion for Christ's sake. Wisconsin makes me think he's in touch with Wisconsin and all he has read since. Nothing else suggests he knew other things going on around him in the world. He could have read anything but he didn't know the last scion, but he knew Rufus, by name.
