: : You're licking your box office wounds?
: Well, not anymore.
: : Honestly, I am, too. I spent most of the summer informing my friends who
: had never heard of your work that, "This is the movie of the summer, just
: you watch. It'll bury American Pie 2, Rush Hour 2, and even Cats and
: Dogs."
: In terms of pure laughs or quality, most would say we did.
I've no disagreement with you there, Kevin. Pound for pound, laugh for laugh, "Jay and Bob" was a superior flick. Of course, if what I thought mattered, the whole world would look different.
: In terms of Box Office, most - if not all - would say you were on crack.
I was probably a little high, especially for someone that wasn't privy to the movie directly. But, again, if I were in the business of professionally estimating the box office of movies, I wouldn't be wasting my time in University.
: :I'd love to entertain your thoughts for a while, especially in light of
: the fantastic numbers the film did in previews.
: You remember a little picture called 'Almost Famous'? Everyone loved it,
: and it did around thirty million bucks at the box office.
"Almost Famous"? Loved it. I'm a complete junkie for Cameron Crowe, and I have been since "Say Anything..." the most under-rated film of my generation.
: How about a picture called 'Fight Club'? Same thing.
Saw it twice in the theatre.
: A flick called 'Billy Madison'?
Twice in the theatre. Twelve of my hard-earned American dollars went to encouraging that Sandler kid.
: What about that movie 'Dogma'.
Heard it was shit, and ran like hell from the theatre.
: Anyhoo, my closing thoughts on box office are thus: can you tell me, off
: the top of your head, without rushing to a box office archives website,
: what 'Ferris Beuller' did? How about 'The Breakfast Club'? How much did
: 'Raising Arizona' eventually tally up? You don't know, do you (again,
: without looking it up)? Regardless, they're still remembered very fondly,
: and watched incessantly today.
I couldn't give you those numbers. First, I'm 20. Second, well, I probably couldnt' if I was 35. Especially not if you can't.
: The same will be true of 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back', if 'Clerks' and : 'Mallrats' are any indication. And at the end of the day, longevity, to : me, is far more satisfying than big box office.
Agreed. And, after all, isn't the objective of the film medium to tell a story that deserves to be told over and over again? Sure, a minor objective is to make money and bang starlets, but isn't that the primary one?
: : I'm the Affleck of your audience, so to speak.
: Meaning you make fifteen million a picture and fuck starlets? If that's
: the case, what the hell are you doing sitting around watching my flicks?
Sadly, that's not the case. But I'm working on it. Right now I'd probably settle for scale and freebies at the streetcorner, but I'm working on it.
: : Thanks for dropping by, Kevin, and perhaps once this place calms down
: with the twelve year olds, and you iron out the details on the next flick,
: we'll see more of you again? I certainly hope so.
: Me too.
Sounds fantastic. I look forward to it. And thanks for taking the time to read my drivel. It means a lot to me as a fan to be able to get some feedback to the creators; you and Jeph "Superman" Loeb are top-notch in this field. Oh, and I can't forget that Jason Lee, either.
