Superman is a symbol of a hero. This is simply a token from thosands of Americans to say thank you for being there, and thank you for going in those buildings. There are many organizations doing supplies and this unique idea is a simple thank you from many Americans when they are done with their very difficult job in NYC. It makes a lot of sense to me.
