: This is a little account of something that happened to me a while back. I thought I would share. This isn't anything ground breaking, just wanted to share sorry if it pisses anyone off.

: Start story:

: A Chance Encounter

: Ames, Iowa was a chillingly boring place in December of 1998. I had finally found a rhythm at the end of my first semester at Iowa State. I would wake up around 5:00 pm, roll off my loft onto the bright gold banana couch and light up a cigarette. My roommate James would soon follow and plop down on our old tweed chair. We would put on some clothes, me in my “fly fat ass fly” T-shirt and him in his “Freelance Gynecologist” shirt and wonder down for Breakfast (or as they called it dinner). Class wasn’t a factor because I had dropped them all but one, and that was just so I could stay. After dinner we would make our way to the super market and buy a bottle of orange juice, some vodka, and a bunch of sexy red cups. We would march right back to our dorm room and commence the partying. This routine was standard procedure for a while, but finals week changed all that.
: On this particular night in December no one was partying. It was finals week and everyone had given up. They are all weak, they couldn’t hack it. We on the other hand were ready for an adventure. The black lights made James look like teeth and eyes when I expressed my interest in getting the hell out of Ames. The time was 4:00 am and the vodka was gone. I told him we should say fuck it and go to New York, Manhattan that is. And he agreed. The alcohol was talking but I didn’t care. I packed my bag and hit the sack, with a resolution that no matter what happens when we wake up, we leave for the big apple.
: 2:00 pm was an early start for us but we had a long trip. Second thoughts creeping into my mind I asked if we where going to do it. We had $125 each and I had a shitty little manual transmission Saturn, but we said fuck it. The trip took nearly 30 hours. Driving through Chicago at midnight watching the nightlife, and taking a trip through Cleveland at 5:00 am where among the stranger things that happened. At about 10:00 am I started to go a little crazy so I pulled over at a rest stop somewhere in Pennsylvania and taught James how to drive a stick. And I crashed for a few hours. I woke up to regain the command chair and bring us on in. Manhattan is a crazy place to drive, especially if your from Omaha, Nebraska. I was scared at first, but once you get that Taxi Driver mentality you can fit right in. We drove around Manhattan trying to find a cheap place to stay. I know, I know, but we are from the Midwest. So we learned that these so called “cheap” places don’t really exist on the island. Finally I gave up and called home.
: My mom is an amazing person, some people think she’s crazy but I think she’s cool. I said “Hey mom guess where I am?”
: She replies with a very surprised and worried mom groan of “Jail!?!”. I told her I was in New York, and she told me to stay at the Hilton for one night and then I was on my own. The Hilton near Times Square is a piece of shit. For close to $400 a night our toilet didn’t even work. But we unloaded and left the shit hole to find some food. We took a cab to some pizza place that I don’t remember and ate dinner.
: Around 9:00 pm, New York time, I was so delirious my notion of time had become a bit askew. On our way back to the Hotel, we hit some heavy traffic so we decided to walk. Getting out of the cab gave us a better view of the situation. Something was going on near our Hotel. Little did I know, but the Ziegfield Theater was right across the street. As we approached the red carpet and the media frenzy, I felt like such a hick from Nebraska, but I was in awe. We hopped up on some concrete benches and watched the famous people roll in. We come to find out it was the premier of Jackie Brown.
: We had the privilege to see some of Hollywood’s finest walk down the red carpet, and we even met a few nice interested bystanders. As I jumped down from my bench and fumbled to get my cigarette lit a familiar voice offered me a light. Standing right next to me was Jason Mewes. He was wearing a pass but apparently needed a smoke and had come out to pass the time, I said thanks and told him I was a big fan, we talked for awhile about how much of a dork Kevin Smith was and how the Hollywood parties where kind of lame. He told me Kevin was inside, and they where going to do some more MTV shorts the next day. He plugged their store to me and that was it. But it was pretty cool to meet Jason, he seemed like a guy who with a little artistic liscence could be a comic book character. I’ve always had a connection to Kevin’s material in some way and it just worked out that he weaseled his way into my big adventure to the big city known as the big apple.
: The next day we stayed at a nicer hotel in Jersey, The Comfort Inn, for less than half the shit hole charged us. We made the extra couple hour drive down to check out Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash and then we took our broke, mid-western asses back to school, which needless to say I do not attend anymore.

:
: Okay, well thanks for reading that. I don't know why I posted it but I felt like it. So thanks.
