: Any thoughts on George Lucas stating that not enough DVD machines have been sold to warrant release of the Original Trilogy?

When did he say that? If he said it back when DVDs first came out, I can understand, but if he said that now, he's an ass. Most people have DVD players now, whether it's hooked up to the TV, in their computer, or in the form of a PS2 (or XBox in a couple months).

: When Recordable DVDs come out (which cannot play old DVDs), then enough of those have to be sold to warrant release.

First of all, recordable DVDs are already here (although very costly, at about $10 per disc), and what makes you think that the players are incompatible with regular DVDs? Even if they were, home DVD players are probably not going to be recordable. Just like your CD player probably can't burn CDs. Both CD-R and DVD-R drives are almost exclusively found in computers (with a few exceptions).

: I remember thinking thank God nobody I know bought the Dogma DVD when it first came out, since there was rumbles of a special edition on the way.
: Now that looks like a worthwhile investment.

Once again, what? I re-read this paragraph a few times, and I'm still not sure what you're getting at.

: But how long will it be before all DVDs become paper weights thanks to RDVD? Anybody know?

They won't. Just as your CD collection did not become trash when recordable CDs came out, your DVDs will still work even though some people can burn their own. DVDs will become paper weights thanks to the video format that will replace DVDs 20 or 30 years down the line. Even the next video format (HDVD, set to debut in a few years) will still be compatible with old DVDs. You have nothing to worry about.
