: The Dow Jones Industrial Avg suffered it's biggest 1-day decline ever, plummeting 86.61 points to 1,792.89. 237.57 million shares traded on September 11, 1986.

"NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The American Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq stock market and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) said they will remain closed through Wednesday after Tuesday's horrific attack on the World Trade Center."

How could the Dow Jones decline when the stock markets are closed? I would like to understand how.
