Magnolia is very well made, but it runs way too long and the writing is uneven. It's very effective and it contains some memorable scenes, but it's a mere shadow of what it could've been.
It's too bad that everyone at View Askew loathed it, but we're all well aware of the proverbial opinion axiom.
For my money, Tom Tykwer's (sp?) The Princess and the Warrior is the best film I've seen in the last few years to deal with the precarious nature of fate and chance.
