Also, to put it in the context that it's used these days...it is a more
"Afrocentric" way to refer to Black people and their roots in ancient
African civilizations. The Nubian empire and culture was a southern
counterpart to the Ancient Egyptians. The notion of Black people as being
"Nubians" was in general developed to counter notions that Africa and
persons of African descent are uncivilized and have made no contributions
to history and culture, and to encourage pride and a positive self-concept
among African-Americans by instilling a sense of ancient history.

: I saw Chasing Amy not too long ago, and can never get a right answer! My
guess is that it's an African American. There's a nubian desert in Africa.
