: LSUKozemp posted on the last board under the title "the 'grand
guignol' bit from the Dogma DVD" –

: : So I finally got around to watching the Dogma DVD this past week
and something struck me.
: : I was watching the bit towards the end, the extended scene with
Azrael and everyone in the bar. For those who haven't seen, in the clip
is a much longer version of the scene in the movie, and in it Azrael
tries to describe what hell is like to Bethany and everyone.
: : What struck me was that the speech he gives is very reminiscent of
the one Lucifer gives in SANDMAN, in Season of Mists when he quits
and abandons hell. If you go back and look at it they're pretty damn
similar.
: : I was just wondering if Gaiman's bit was a sort of direct inspiration
for Kevin's work in the film, or if it was just another one of those
synchronicity things.

:
: The Grand Guignol bit was supposed to be what we WOULD HAVE
SEEN in the images of Hell had the scene been kept intact and
effects created for it. As it is, there is just a card explaining where the
Grand Guignol bit would have gone. Not terribly bold, dramatic,
gruesome or horrible.

: For the record, though, Kevin did thank a number of comic creators
in the credits for DOGMA and Gaiman is prominent among them.

Read the Kevin Smith essay on Dogma that is contained in the little
paper booklet that came inside the Dogma DVD case. He states that
Gaiman's Sandman was a big influence on the script.
