Sounds like to me that the projectionist might have had a "situation" in the booth. I spent many a night stoned in the booth and watching movies "brain wrap" on the platter. A brain wrap is when the film gets tangled up before it goes into the projector. When this happens it's quicker to cut out the fucked up piece of film. This might be what happened.
Another reason might be that someone has taken the film print and cut out frames for souverniers.....of course I wouldn't know how this is done! ;)
