Mr. Smith,
screw the opening weekend take, top ten category, and the academy! you put out a great flick and that is the true "bottom line."
I am a recent fan (about 5 months ago) after watching Dogma on video and have since purchased ALL of your films on DVD (even the f*#@ing "unscensored" cartoon, which may constitute a gay move on my part, but I digress.)
Some film greats received little or no attention upon debut and some were fodder for the critics of the time and still went on to become cinematic legends: Apocolypse Now, Casablanca, Citizen Kane, (even George Lucas thought Star Wars was gonna blow pecker right before its release) and one of the greatest films from the greatest screenwriter since Murray Burnett, (ok, Burnett co-wrote 1 play and adapted it into a movie, but it ROCKED!!!) Wyatt Earp by Lawrence Kasdan (it will receive its props.)
You put out a great and funny flick, and your body of work has thus far been excellent. Waiting your next feature film with baited breath. . .

P.S.
stay away from 3+ hour scripts attached to Kris Kristofferson, what the HELL was Tim B. thinking when he cast him as an anti-monkey!!
