I think that gay organizations, in particular (but this can apply to many other organizations) are important initially to raise public awareness of the existence of a group, minority, issue, etc.
But when those organizations, which are doing for the most part a positive service, become institutions that exist only to perpetuate THEMSELVES, then it's time to rethink the basic values and reasons for it's creation and ongoing existence. Ever see 'The Crow?' "The idea has become the institution." Truer words ne'er were spoken.
