Kevin Smith's new slacker comedy Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back delivered the best performance among the weekend's five new releases opening with $11M. Invading 2,765 theaters, the Miramax title averaged a so-so $3,985 per venue. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the R-rated comedy a B+ grade, however the $20M film suffered a horrendous 24% decline on Saturday due to the director's cult following rushing out on opening day. Jay and Silent Bob was given the most ambitious launch ever for a Kevin Smith film. His last effort, 1999's controversial Dogma, opened with $8.7M but played in less than half the number of theaters as Jay and Silent Bob.
