: 18 to 34 year olds, get your ass to the flick now. You seem to be the target group.
*MILD SPOILERS*
Last night, I hung around for two showings at Anne Arundel County's (that's MD.) biggest multiplex and drifted into two consecutive shows playing in two different auditoriums. It was playing alongside of "Summer Catch" and "AP2," both of which were sold out. In fact there was a crew of young folks (pre-20 guys + gals) ahead of me in line who were angsting over the fact that "Summer Catch" was sold out!
Funny exchange a little bit further ahead of me in line. The only time I heard the film invoked that evening outside of my own mouth was from a young black cat about 12-13. He was with his mother and younger sister and when mom asked which he wanted, he was like: "Jay and Silent Bob! I want to see Jay and Silent Bob?"
Mom asks: "Wassit rated?"
With his response, he gave a tight smile so enthusiastic that I know it's only a matter of time before he finds his way to this board: "It's R...but I still wanna s e e it!"
The theatre was 1/4 full, tops! It was a fan-based crew either. No laughs at the in-jokes (except for a familiar snicker from me because I still think this movie's pretty funny) and worst of all...no applause for Mark Hamill.
When I hopped into the second showing, the theatre was still barren but at least there was a lot of laughter. Enough that I could discern that I was with an audience that had seen Clerks.
I saw the sneak in that same auditorium and it was packed with fans ("It was g o o d!," one might say.). I also caught the flick last night, same showing and it was packed with a mixture of fans and newcomers. It wasn't as good as the sneak, but it was a fun night.
Last night? Dead quiet in comparison. Especially that first crowd. It was like someone pissed in their popcorn.
: Go punch up the numbers.
I think SilentRiggs nailed this one below with a bullet.
These final days in August are highly romanticized by a lot of aforementioned target audience who are all trying to have the perfect wrap-up for that Dreyfuss-narrated memoir later on.
Actually, everyone who's hooked up this summer is making damn sure they get laid as much as they can before they drift out of one another's lives for the Next Semester. Everyone's too busy partying and being mushy to pull themselves in out of the waning, summertime night to watch this thing.
I'm not blaming or judging them either since on average we only get 75-80 seasons like this in a lifetime and we've usually blown 30 of 'em already by the time we realize that.
: Do without a $15 bag of weed today.
Ah, gramp.
It's the late August "dry season," my friend. Everyone's waiting on harvest. . .so a lot of cats are doing without anyway.
S a y!! You don't suppose this is a factor in a certain mass indifference to the latest stoner flick, do you?
