As an aspiring filmmaker (which means I'm not one yet, but planning on it), people always ask me "Why movies?" or "Why the frick do you want to work in movies?" I always chuckle to them and say "Why not?" But I never really figured out why until I started watching Kevin Smith's movies. For some reason, Clerks is the epitomie of indy film. It's a simple, witty, 27 grand film which launched an entire sub-culture (of which we are all a part) and catapulted one guy from Red Bank, NJ to superstardom. Honestly, right now, Kevin Smith is one of the most recognized names in Hollywood (and Canada). So after watching Clerks, then Chasing Amy, then Mallrats, then Dogma, and now Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, I've finally found my reason.
Movies kick ass. Movies entertain people. Ever since I've been a little kid, I've loved to entertain people. I was always the little kid who'd run into things just to get the laughs from people. I'm always with the quick wit and the comebacks. In short: I'm a smart ass. And people dig it. And since I dig entertaining folks, and I dig movies, I'm gonna get my ass to film school. Sure, it's a couple years away, but Kevin Smith helped me focus my energies (like a laser, if you will) towards becoming a filmmaker. Heck, if I can be half the filmmaker than Kevin Smith is, I'll be a damned happy guy. And on a side note, if my wife/girlfriend can be half as hot as Kevin's is, I'll be a damned happy guy, too. But that's another thing all together...
So if anybody needs me, I'll be busy finishing my original script entry for the Toronto International Teen Movie Festival. Thanks for making me motivated, Kev, by just making flicks about dick & fart jokes. Love the dick jokes, man, love 'em.
