I have spent the last several years being married and having babies (I'm raising Our Future, how surreal is that?), and hence was not acquainted with Mr. Smith's work. Earlier this year, "Dogma" was forced upon me by a friend whose taste I trust. I was smitten.
When I found out this movie was coming out, I determined that I had to watch the rest of his movies before being there for opening night of "J&SBSB." Last weekend we rented "Clerks," which slew me. The next night we watched "Mallrats." (We have three children under the age of seven...we normally watch about one movie a MONTH. Including DVDs.) Thursday night we got through "Chasing Amy." So my introduction to this body of work has been a sort of headlong plummet with a deadline.
We went last night, and I do not remember hearing an audience laugh its collective ass off more in my entire life than we did last night. It was the first full-price movie admission I hadn't regretted since "Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon" (Shut up...I'm a geek).
A friend of mine pointed me to this message at 5:10 this evening. Because of my kids, I am not normally able to do much of anything on the spur of the moment. Fortunately, my husband was more than willing to let me dump the responsibility for the kids on him for a couple of hours, and my friend and I raced to the theater and got there ten minutes after the 5:20 showing had started. (It was Good Neighbor Hour prices....hope that doesn't cut into your percentage, man.) I still laughed my ass off at every cock, clit and fart joke. I'm a 31-year-old woman, but apparently I have the soul of a 14-year-old boy. I'm a bisexual woman and every joke fucking nailed me.
Sorry for going on about this, but I wanted to let you guys know how much of an impression the mind behind these films has made on me. Good work, man....awesome entertainment.
