: I've never read anything more anal retentive and ridiculous in my life.

: Go outside, breathe in the fresh air, and worry about other things than my use of terminology re: 16:9 enhanced DVDs. I may not have used the EXACT terminology that you prefer, but I damn well know the difference between a matted 16:9 image and a 16:9 enhanced image and don't need to be "schooled" by the likes of you, who obviously doesn't know everything that you seem to think you know, observe:

: : Anyhoo... it is *impossible* to represent a 1.66:1 image anamorphically enhanced without degrading the image quality.
: : Let me explain:
: : A 1.85:1 ratio film when stored anamorphically on DVD's take up the full frame yes?

: No they don't- 16:9 measures 1.78:1, so 1.85:1 films have to have small black bars top and bottom to keep the full frame in "16:9 enhanced" format.

: : A 1.66:1 image requires an image past the end of the frame, which is obviously impossible.
: : The only way this could be done would be to create black bars down the side of the image, which would obviously degrade the image (reducing the amount of "vertical lines" (for want of a better term!)) and thus reducing the resolution of the image.
: : Put a pen to paper and see for yourself, it really is *technically* impossible!
: : Cheers,

: You are WRONG, I explained this in my last post which you either didn't read or didn't understand, oh learned one. Do you know what "windowboxed" means? It means black bars on all four sides of the image- a 16:9 enhanced DVD with a 1.66:1 image will be windowboxed if shown on a 4:3 television downconverted- HOWEVER the black bars at the side will be almost entirely matted OFF SCREEN by the normal overscan of your television. Yes, there will be "dead space" at the sides of the FULL IMAGE, however on almost any TV YOU NEVER SEE THE FULL IMAGE- THE IMAGE IS OVERSCANNED. The area that is recorded black YOU ALMOST CERTANLY WOULD NOT SEE ANYWAY.

: There are SEVERAL 16:9 enhanced DVDs in 1.66:1 format out there- yes, they have black bars at the side, but those black bars are matted off on most televisions due to overscan, and this "simple math" you talk about will show you that the "resolution" lost at the sides by doing a 16:9 enhanced wondowboxed 1.66:1 transfer is LESS than would be lost doing a 1.66:1 matted 4:3 format transfer, and the resolution on the final DVD would be CONSIDERABLY GREATER than the current 1.85:1 matted 4:3 format DVD. In discussions with Cliff over at DVD File, he pointed out that somebody once did the math and it turned out that for any aspect ratio above 1.54:1 you GAIN more resolution that you lose via windowboxing by doing it in 16:9 enhanced format with black bars on the sides. So obviously, a 1.66:1 windowboxed-within-the-16:9-enhanced-frame transfer will have more resolution than either a 1.66:1 matted 4:3 format transfer and ESPECIALLY a 1.85:1 matted 4:3 format transfer as the current DVD is.

I still don't get why people have to be so damn stupid. Lates, Dude.
