- you'll use the standard lenses and just "protect" the image for possible blow-up to 1.85:1 35mm projection. An easy way to "protect"- and the way it was done on CLERKS- is to keep the important picture information in the "T.V. safe" area- this is a box within the full 16mm frame that's etched into most 16mm ground-glasses and represents the possible cropping off all four sides of the image should it be shown on TV. The thing is, if you extend the top and bottom lines to the edge of the frame, you'll find that it measures almost exactly 1.66:1, which is close to 1.85:1. When shooting CLERKS all important picture information was kept in this "T.V. safe" area, which resulted in a pretty straight-forward blow-up with only some occasional reositioning of the frame up-or-down to keep the framing looking right in 1.85:1.

You can also shoot in Super-16, which has an actual negative shape of 1.66:1 and was specifically made for 35mm blow-up. Super-16 works by elliminating the sprocket holes on one side of the frame and extending the frame into the sprocket hole area, so the height is the same as standard 16mm but the frame is wider. CHASING AMY was shot this way. The ARE anamorphic lenses for 16mm, but they are rarely used. I did hear of a recent indie film that shot with 16mm and anamorphics and it supposedly looks really interesting, but I can't recall the name of that film.

The format Lucas is using for ATTACK OF THE CLONES is an entirely new format called "24P"- basically, high-definition video running at 24 frames per second and usingprogressive rather than interlaced scanning. The frame is 1080 X 1920 pixels, or a native aspect ratio of 1.78:1 (16:9). For ATTACK OF THE CLONES, the image is being matted to approximately 800 X 1920 pixels for a 'Scope aspect ratio.

: Could you achieve the same Aspect Ration of a 35mm film with a 16mm camera with a different lense or whatever George Lucas did to those Video cameras that he shot Episode 2 with?
