: okay, im trying to think of a way to explain this. is the pan & scan the thing that makes certain movies on television (not dvd or vhs) look odd. like when characters move left to right, it looks like it's actually the camera is moving over the film itself instead of the camera actually moving left and right on the set? does this make any sense? it also sorta
: looks like the film is being stretched. some movies that i have noticed it the worst on are cliffhanger, a league of their own(i cant believe i just admited to watching that), and the fan. these were flat out horrible.

: if this is what you are talking about...thank you so much..because i have been wondering this for years, i just havent been able to describe it...and obviously still cant :-p

Pan & Scan has been used for years and can be found on both VHS and DVD. Like anything some Movies are done better than others. What I think you are talking about is where things are oddly zoomed in and or cropped. Networks and what not will edit movies for content or to take out product placements that the networks are banning or the product owners will not or cannot advertise on said network. See the ABC, MALLRATS some weird edits there. These edits are generally done by lets just say less than stellar editors with some suit Program Director hanging over their shoulder saying "Zoom here! Cut there! Get that coke can out of the shot!"

Hope that helped.
