Dear Kevin,
This is my very first post here. First of all, my sincere condolences. Way back in the day, I developed a website called PlanetOut.com (a web-portal for gays & lesbians) and I had many run-in’s with GLAAD and it’s people. While at their core they have good intentions, it has been my experience in dealing with them that they are headed in such an extreme left position that they will one day not be taken seriously by the majority. Just like the far religious right. And this is terrible, because again, the intentions are good and pure.
I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your work and how powerful Chasing Amy is as an exploration of the complexities of sexuality and the desire to just find love. I really think it was one of the most well-written and relevant love stories of my generation, and GROSSLY unacknowledged as so. You should be angry that you didn’t get any GLAAD awards! It brings to mind a friend of mine, writer Kevin Williamson, who has been given multiple GLAAD awards (and deservedly so, I mean the guy did have that guy come out on Dawson’s Creek, a ballsy thing to do). But the major thing here is that Williamson is an openly gay man. Here you are, a straight gay-friendly director who makes one of the most realistic and funny pro-gay movies ever, NOT made by a gay man, and they shut you out. Believe me, I’ve had my share of arguments about GLAAD with Kevin, mostly about Eminem (whose music was co-written by my cousin, Tommy Coster, Jr) and how even though he’s publicly stated he’s not homophobic (and I know him to be not, just maybe a little bitch) AND had a duet with Elton John to prove his lyrics were social commentary, GLAAD still didn’t listen to sense. Granted, Eminem on the surface may not have redeeming values…… but you? You who virtually slams it into the audience? This was the last straw to me.
It extends further and is even more deeply rooted. I remember arguing with lesbians at PlanetOut about how they thought “Chasing Amy” was just some male fantasy about having a lesbian turn straight. Did we see the same movie? I think the problem comes down to the fact that when people are so insecure about themselves, any time that insecurity is brought to light, like you do so well in your movies, it is criticized and feared.
So I wanted to praise your strength and extend my love and support to you. Keep making those movies and know that the other people are wrong. I know as a screenwriter myself having just finished something called “The Real James Spader”, an attack on the obsession with celebrities, that I will be bracing for attacks from groups left and right (of course if I can survive Hollywood and get it made). It’s tough to shout out those morals and still make a great dick and fart joke. I applaud you, and I think I speak for all of Group Woopsie.
