I know there's been far too many people posting their letters to GLAAD but here's mine anyway. If you don't give a shit what I've said - ignore it. There's plenty of other pointless posts on this board after all.
And while your ignoring stuff, feel free not to visit www.thehybrid.co.uk

Hello, and please do not be afraid that this is yet another hate mail style criticism from a rabid Kevin Smith fan. I am, of course, a fan of Kevin Smith's work, and I have as much respect for his previous works as all of the other fans from whom I am sure you have received letters, abuse, etc.
Please read my thoughts in their entirety because I hope that I can offer some ideas that have not yet been expressed by the aforementioned over-enthusiastic and sometimes juvenile fan base. (I realise that your issues with this movie apply to how these people think, but bear with me).
Kevin has made mistakes.
Something that I do not feel was a mistake is his new movie, "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back". That I will get to shortly.
An important recent mistake as I perceive it was to ask fans from his web site to get in contact with you regarding your issues with his new movie.
You know and I know that Kevin Smith is in no way a homophobe. I do not state that light lightly, I mean that he is in NO WAY a homophobe. "Chasing Amy" may not be the movie that is opening this weekend but you yourself have stated how important that movie was in demonstrating Kevin Smith's attitude to homosexuality. Unfortunately, the people currently populating his web site are impressionable. I know, I know, these are the people that you are talking about, they are the very people that you are trying to shield from the satire contained in Kevin's new movie - because they react by simulating the opinions of Kevin as they perceive them. But what you are doing will not help.
Worse, I feel that what you are doing may undermine your own efforts and your own credibility. The primary point of your argument seems to be that many of the viewing public will not understand the satire contained in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Many members of the public will read this to mean "GLAAD think we are stupid". People do not like to be told that, even indirectly. Maybe I am overestimating the intelligence of the general populace, but I'd rather think that you're underestimating.
And those that know the works of Kevin Smith know how truly petty you are being, and so far seem to perceive this as an effort to gain money or publicity.
Now - onto the specifics of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. It features characters that are well established in the previous films by Kevin Smith. Granted, viewers new to his work will not understand the character development that has lead to them speaking in the way they do in this most recent movie, but does that give you the right to publicly brand Kevin Smith as a homophobe? That may not be your intention, but that will be the result of your current course of action. Just as you are stating that, despite Kevin Smith's previous pro-gay efforts, his current movie may provoke homophobia. Do you want someone that could be a worthy ally to your cause to become a pariah? It will happen, and you will do it.
This movie contains characters that represent society as it exists NOW. And it makes fun of them. Homophobes exist. It's a bad thing but it is true. Can we not at least mock them? Are you so afraid that ignorant people will not get the joke and therefore become more homophobic? Personally, I believe that anyone that is so stupid that they will not understand the satire contained within Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back are stupid enough to be homophobic already. They will not understand that the movie is having a go at THEM. Anyone that really looks up to Jay is already a lost cause to you, this movie will make it no worse. Preach to the parents of these ignorant assholes before you attack the artist behind it.
You seem to understand the intent of the movie, and yet you are creating a fuss around it because some people may not get the true message of the film. Maybe your efforts would be better spent trying to reinforce the satirical elements of this movie - go out there, explain to people that Jay might be gay. That Silent Bob might be gay. That, *Shock Horror*, they may be an "in-the-closet-couple". Get these ignorant, homophobic idiots that you are so worried about to watch Chasing Amy. Just don't cause bad press for a man that is a seriously important advocate of your own cause.
I respect your cause but I think you dropped the ball on this one.
Dave.
