Kevin, dude. I enjoy your movies, but YOU are the one who has made the bigger mistake.
GLAAD is just like all these other shakedown operations (NOW, the ADL, the NAACP, and RAINBOW/PUSH). You should have either ignored the letter you received from GLAAD or sent back an angry reply saying that the reviewer must have his head up his ass (pun intended).
But by far your most grievous error was to offer money. If you want to give money, then give it without the publicity. Whether you wanted to or not, it comes off looking like you caved and admit that there is something wrong or objectionable in your movies. None of your real fans think you're a homophobe and no rational movie-goer will either. So why the drama? By giving in to GLAAD you just made it tougher for the next struggling director to get his or her voice/message heard.
VioLenT BoB (and others) are right, you should stand up for free speech and tell them to go fuck themselves.
