So, I just returned from my local independent cinema and picked up a schedule for the upcoming month. It seems that they are doing a Kevin Smith Marathon leading up to the release of J&SBSB. I got excited at the prospect of this because I've only ever seen two of Kevin's films on the big screen (Chasing Amy and Dogma). Clerks only ran on something like 3 screens and Mallrats was gone before you could blink twice at it. So, I look at the dates and there they are. Dogma, surprisingly enough is being run on the 22nd, I guess they didn't get the update on the release. They're running Chasing Amy on the 20th and Clerks on the 18th. You may notice something conspicuously absent in this list of titles.
What happened with Mallrats? Did Smith do some deal with the devil, did Mewes insult some old witch that turned around and put a curse on him? Is Shannen Doherty just bad luck? This film can't even get shown in a cinema where 20 people is a 'packed house' and will be running bad soft-core gay ('alternative') films for most of the month of August. I liked Mallrats. All of my friends liked Mallrats. I know people that don't like Kevin Smith movies that like Mallrats. The DVD has apprarently sold very well. It's a given that the world needs a "smart porky's", so what the hell went wrong that this half-assed little art-fag cinema won't show the goddamned thing?
Note: For the guys from GLAAD. There's nothing wrong with *good* gay films like "Priscilla, Queen of The Desert" or "Beautiful Thing". I'm not bashing gays here, I'm bashing bad films. Also, "art-fag" has nothing to do with homosexuality.
Cheers,
Heath
