homosexual, actually, as far as I know people don't use that word to mean that over there. I don't think England ever burned homosexuals, at least not after the Anglican split. They had different laws during the witch hunts/Reformation, for example you couldn't legally torture people (although you could imprison, starve, sleep-deprive, drug, rape and execute them, but there wasn't state-sponsored torture as part of the legal process). I'd have to refresh my memory on the subject.

: English and Catholic don't go together. The people who would have used that word to describe homosexuals (if your etymology is correct) would've been Anglican or more likely some flavor of Calvinist.

: The Catholics have a great deal of blood on our hands in Europe proper, but after Henry VII (and his beheading of St. Thomas More) religious atrocity in English speaking places tends not to be the fault of filthy Papists.
