Superman Question

Ok....so I was watching my Superman collection yesterday and this thought crossed my mind. If Superman is from Krypton, why is it that Kryptonite can kill him? I don't get it. Also, in Superman 2 when he changes into a mortal for Lois, he is told by his mother that he can never change back. How is that he could change back when he found out about General Zod?
If anyone can answer this for me, I will be greatful.
