Clerks question for Kevin, hopefully a new one

I just got Clerks on DVD and saw the original ending where Dante gets shot. I was just wondering if the gum being shoved in the locks was a bit of forshadowing that Dante would later get shot. Maybe the shooter did it so no one could see it through the window when he came back later? Am I reading too much into this? Just got me to thinking when I saw it, which I know is a dnagerous thing.
