An accusation of witchcraft being "just a handle people wanted to hang on" John Proctor, that is just beyond ignorant. It meant the loss of life, the loss of one's property, one's reputation, one's family, horrible torture and one would also be forced to accuse one's friends and neighbors.
It might seem that I'm harping on a point but what a casual comment to make. If I were Catholic I certainly wouldn't go around making off-hand remarks about the witch-hunts, or the Inquisition or the Holocaust for that matter, unless I had a better understanding of the history. Am I asking too much?
