I have a few friends who are professional actors. They all had a great love for the theatre and films. They all studied very hard. They were all incredibly dedicated towards learning everything they could about their craft. They were all very talented. And they all spend an awful lot of time unemployed.

This tells me that you really have no idea about what acting's all about. Ever wondered why so few models are taken seriously when they do films? It can't be the sex appeal...hang on - maybe it's the ACTING?
Honestly, acting is a job for seriously dedicated people who have full knowledge of what they're getting into and all the potential pitfalls that go along with it. Are you ready for the dishwashing jobs and poverty? There are jobs available for less than 10% of all actors available. Think about it.
Don't ask what makes an actor. Ask what makes YOU an actor. Seriously.
