>>i have yet to pick up any 'mage'. however, from what i've got from reading various publications, doesn't it seem a bit silly that excalibur has been downgraded to a louiville slugger?<<
Not a bit, Mage is a contextual piece that works very well, indeed. Matt Wagner writes a good solid story with fine and subtle characterizations.
Problem is, when something is considered without benifit of actual experience, the resulting opinion is (by nature) flawed. What might seem silly to someone who's not read the piece in question might make sense when seen as part of the whole. Try reading the material, if, afterwards, you still think it's silly, then at the very least your opinion will be based on the material itself.
Sort-of Spoiler:(though others have preceeded me in mentioning it)
Since he'll be appearing in GA soon enough, I'll add this...if you're an Etrigan fan, Wagner did a 4-ish series in the early 80's which was truly splendid.
Snootch to the motherfuckin' nootch!
