I've only been involved in this type of situation where a bunch of people were hooking up in one room and switching off...it was mostly a voyeuristic thing and no full intercourse was involved, although intoxicating substances certainly played a part. Everything turned out cool, although I think someone's girlfriend who wasn't there broke up with him when she discovered the evidence: his badly hickied body (don't blame her).
However, I was propositioned by my best (female) friend once for a menagerie with her and her boyfriend. She and I had hooked up before, so that wasn't a problem. I turned it down because her boyfriend was funk-nasty and I didn't approve of their relationship; I also don't approve of two people in a relationship having a threesome with someone else. Three close friends who all love each other and are very laid-back, maybe.
It's a fantasy I hope to fulfill someday, but not unless the situation is absolutely right -- I've seen Chasing Amy, I don't need to live it more than I already do. If it doesn't come from the 3, 4 or more people genuinely wanting and enjoying each other, then it's just for show, and when people have sex for show it's bound to end up badly. Besides, sex is complicated enough when only 2 people are involved.
