Why post this? After looking at over 150 houses and townhouses in a car with this man, I want to share one of the few bits of entertainment I have gleaned from this experience. Don't get me wrong - my realtor isn't a bad guy, and I know his job is to find me a house to buy rather than entertain me.
Anyway, for some quick background: My realtor is in his mid-40s, likes to talk about faith and religion and community, is a big fan of Bill Cosby.
I was not in the car for the Pearl Harbor conversation - my girlfriend was. He asked her if she had seen it, and she said she hadn't and asked if it was any good. He replied, "I thought it was great! I'm a sucker for any type of movie that has RELATIONSHIPS in it. You know, mother-daughter, father-son, brothers...well, Pearl Harbor had a lot of relationship stuff in it that was really well done. I cried."
Having forgotten that my girlfriend had told me of this conversation, I was talking with our realtor (let's call him Ken) a few days later about his problems with rebellious kids. Ken said that he felt like his kids had some spirituality in them, but he didn't think it was at a conscious level where they could even begin talking about what their beliefs are. I asked if he had seen Dogma. He said he wasn't sure, and I started in on naming Kevin and his other movies and the names of the actors in Dogma. When I mentioned Matt and Ben, he said, "Oh yeah! I think I did rent that - didn't the O in Dogma have a cross in it?" I replied, "Yes..." He continued, "oh yeah, didn't one of their wings get chopped off or hacked off or something..." with a look that showed a memory of discomfort and/or disgust. I replied, "Yeah, that's the one. I just thought that movie might be a good place to begin that kind of discussion with your kids - although you may not want the 14-year-old watching it..."
He responded that she had already seen everything, which led off in a different, less interesting direction.
Oh well, I found this mildly amusing at least.
