Clerks original ending...

Question, was there ever a reason why Kevin and Miramax - or whoever - cut the scene out where Dante is shot dead? It seems that the explanation I've heard really seems quite arbitrary. If recollection serves me - that, and I don't recall if Clerks FAQ touches on the reason - that it was because they didn't want it ending on a "downer". Or, maybe that was just conjecture on some other posters part.
