I don't know. I think if Prince had made himself over into a '90s update, it would have come off cheap and dropped both the mainstream and a good portion of his core fans. UNDER THE CHERRY MOON is problematic mostly because it's so unbelievably boring.

I think you're wrong about that being a persona. I think he's just really a weird guy. That's become clear in many ways. I'm sure any number of people read that and thought I was insulting him and nothing could be further from the truth.
That's not to say that he sat down with Kevin for their meeting and slithered a talked in a mysterious voice, but I think that thing is a legitimate part of who he is.
