It used to have a moral, hook, conclusion, etc. to each episode, but now the newer episodes can end abruptly, and not make any sense. Like Homer losing his thumb. It's a lot more strange now than it is funny, like you said...but I really dig the older episodes much more. The writers probably have something to do with this morbid, dark comedy the Simpsons have become. Each show is some extremely wacky, out-of-place adventure, and there's no more social commentary or making fun of celebrities and movies. And Homer just isn't the same.
Ahh...the perils of a nerd-stalgic Simpsons fan.
