The following has absolutely nothing to do with Bruce Campbell.
Lee came in to audition for Mallrats like anybody else.
The guys liked him so much they kept asking him to come back for auditions, although they had no intention of actually putting him in the movie.
Things worked out for the best as they finally realized that not only Lee was a standup guy, but he was the best man for the role.
