Then Todd McFarlane came along and ripped that off, by creating Cogliostro, who served much of the same purpose, although he too was a Hellspawn, but preceeded Al Simmons.

Then, whichever came first, I don't know, but Buffy the Vampire Slayer uses the whole "lineage" mantra, where the same powers are bestowed every generation to someone new...and Witchblade does much of the same. So generally, there is a lot of this happening, and J. Michael Straczynski looks like he's doing this with Ezekial, who will probably be the cliched mysterious old man who acts as tutor to Spider-Man, unlocking some un-tapped potential, and helping him discover new things about himself...in case Spidey overlooked any of them in the last 40 years of his existence...
