Buzzcocks, Gang of Four, or the Damned scares me ... : )

also deserving mention would be The Birthday Party, the Toy Dolls
(blink 182 with talent and a hugely original sound...), Blondie, PiL, the
Pixies, etc.

hell, They Might Be Giants are more punk than anything on the radio
right now. For me it's always been about the attitude more than the
sound.

Cocteau Twins is another band that lived and breathed the "punk"
ideal... DIY to the core (the only outside producer they ever had was
on their first single in 1982), rarely did interviews, didn't tour much,
didn't give a shit what people thought. that's why i love them so...
