Ben Fong-Torres is indeed a real person, a real editor from Rolling Stone's glory years, as is Charles Perry, the effeminate-looking gentleman with the cigarette holder, as is Jann Wenner, who actually makes a cameo appearance in "Almost Famous." Look for him in the cab that William almost dives into.
