Actually, Tom Hank's character died in the film, NOT Tom Hanks, and i believe the film ended the way it did for a good reason. People living with AIDS (not dying from AIDS), while not truly healthy, they live full, happy lives. Some cases are worse than others, and some people are into the "Why me?" kick of it all and feel bitter, whatever. And that's ok, it works for them, but to say that it was inevitable that he'd die, is to show a complete lack of understanding for life itself. We all will die eventualy. Tom Hank's character dying brought about a sence of closer and finality that says "Here. This man died from AIDS right here." This method is not only emotional, it doesn't leave you wondering if he died when he was older or still young.
