I remember always telling Kev how hilarious Brian Lynch was, and Kev always kind of went, "Yeah, uh huh. Sure." There was a weird little coincidence also, in that while Brian and I were freshman in high school, Lynch went to some sort of high school comedy sketch festival, and by coincidence Kevin did a sketch at that same festival. Kevin apparently got a lot of heat for his sketch, a take-off on the Jennifer Levin murder with the Cat in the Hat taking on the Robert Chambers role, and Brian swears that he walked up to a smoking Kevin after the event and told him how funny it was, although Kevin swears that he absolutely, positively did not smoke back then.

ANYWAY, Kevin met Brian once or twice (we all went to see COOL WORLD together at the Amboys Multiplex), but I can still distinctly remember the moment that Kevin finally saw what I was always telling him about in Brian. It was during pre-production on A BETTER PLACE, and Kevin returned home from Los Angeles with an early edit of MALLRATS on tape and Brian, Eion Bailey, and myself went to Kevins and he showed us some scenes from the film. Brian laughed out loud at a particular joke and Kevin was really impressed- apparently, the joke was a favorite of Kevin's but few folks had laughed at it before. Brian was also his usual hilarious self that entire night, and a couple days later I saw Kevin and he said, "You know, I really see what you're talking about with Brian now. He's really funny. I can see why you guys are such good friends." Towards the end of that year while I was still cutting A BETTER PLACE, Brian gave Kevin an early draft of BIG HELIUM DOG, and Kevin loved it. I believe he told me he was laughing out loud while reading it during a plane ride to Los Angeles. Ben Affleck read the script while making CHASING AMY and also loved it and really pushed Kevin to produce it, and Affleck was going to even take a fairly substantial role in the film but had to bail due to his ARMAGEDDON duties.

Oh, and there are also the back-alley blow jobs that Brian mentioned in his post, but the above is pretty much how Brian met Kevin and thus became a part of the View Askew family.
