: ...becomes a cult-classic among the dreaded MTV generation teens, it really makes you think. Mallrats was much funnier in my opinion, and the dialogue was advanced and thoughtful. Not to mention this new genre of film where a group of no more or less than 4 average(not popular, not "losers") teenagers in high school make a pact, go on an adventure, or do crazy shit that would never happen...anywhere...ever. This is trite, redundant, tired, stale, clicheed...all of that. And now you're seeing this "humor" everywhere, and we can thank MTV for implanting this false-idea of comedy into these gullably stupid teenager's minds. They'll go see anything. I myself am 16 years old...and I refuse to watch MTV or follow along with pop-culture. I also refuse to go see a movie heralded by these Gen-X suburban white kids who listen to gangsta rap and wear Johnny Blaze. I'm your average, suburban, white kid. I listen to rock from the early 90s and late 70s, and I'm not popular nor regarded as a loser in my school...and I'm happy about that. I'm just...there. That's why I love Kevin Smith films. They do something that hasn't been done before. And, Clerks and Mallrats are on the prism of realism, especially Clerks. It can actually happen, this movie. It probably has happened many times to many people. Meanwhile. four 16 year olds who steal the gullable, shy, straight-edged kid's parent's car, as they plan to go on a trip to Tokyo to star in a game show, and their mishaps along the way, are NOT believable. And it's all been done before. And it's not real comedy. Comedy these days is almost non-existent...and drama these days is all about drug-trafficking, it seems. Movies as a whole may be dying out, as lack of originality comes in to play. The only movie plots I've truly appreciated within the last few years are Final Destination, Chasing Amy, Dogma, American Beauty, and Fight Club. Weird, huh? Originality is key. Comedies are all the same these days. Put a fresh-faced 19 year old known by the rabid MTV-viewing, TRL-watching teens in a "comedy", containing sex, sex, sex, and more sex, and they'll be as content as a pig in shit. My rant here is done. Signs of the end times, my friends, signs of the end times...
