"Bartelby" is inspired by the Melville character just as "Brodie Bruce" was inspired by "Billy Budd". It's all in Kevin Smith's birth charts (not our Kevin Smith,the Kevin Smith from "Hercules"-big props to "3eves" for this tip). I'll bet it never occured to you that Mr. Svenning and T.S. were based on Captain Ahab and Ishmael, respectively. It's the whole Jaws/Moby Dick thing.
