If I had to guess, I'd say it's because Kev has or had a pretty big laserdisc collection and he didn't want them to be rendered obsolete and useless by DVD. Which is what happened, so a bit of bad luck there. But he seems to be a proponent of the format now, so it's all good. Mallrats DVD is the best DVD I own!
