He bet Bartleby that it was going to be BIGGER than E.T.
I.e, it's BOX OFFICE numbers would be more succesful than that of the little Alien-that-could-movie, E.T.
Hence the secondary line, "Time will tell on that one."
Kinda like how Mallrats is no longer a movie that lost money because of its worldwide totals as well as video rental and sales here and abroad.
