: I remember reading on either DVDFILE.com or The Digital Bits that Lynch has never really shown any interest in the home video presentation of his films. From all the bios I've read, Lynch strikes me as someone who really can't be forced to care about something. Has he shown signs of coming around for dvd presentations?
Lynch wasn't too into home video versions of his films in the past, but it seems like that's changing. He's actively involved with FIRE WALK WITH ME apparently, and in the book "Lynch on Lynch" he discusses his problems with the current state of home video but also mentions that "soon digital video formats that can approximate the theater image will be available"- I'm paraphrasing but that's basically what he said, and I'm guessing DVD with it's noise-free color has impressed Lynch.
: Also, (I know I'm risking Smalls here, but...) Vincent, did you ever hear about a rumored Criterion laserdisc set planned for Wild At Heart? About three years before LD finally phased out, I remember hearing that Criterion was going to produce the first ever David Lynch special edition with with a $130 platter set. Do you know if Criterion ever aquired the rights to the flick? How long do you imagine we'll have to wait for an anamorphic transfer on that one?
Criterion wasn't going to do WILD AT HEART- Elite Entertainment was back when Don May (he of Synapse Films, the company releasing A BETTER PLACE) was still one half of the company. The project fell apart because Lynch never gave them approval to use the longer Cannes cut for the laserdisc. Like DOGMA, WILD AT HEART premiered at Cannes in a slightly longer version, and when Don May visited the vaults at Goldwyn he was given the choice of two interpositives- the theatrical release version, or the longer Cannes version. Don wanted to release the longer Cannes version but didn't want to do so without Lynch's permission and involvement- Lynch was always "too busy" aparently to get back to Don, and finally the rights reverted back to the original rights holder and the laserdisc was cancelled. Nobody seems to know exactly who owns the video rights now- Anchor Bay had WILD AT HEART listed as "in development" for ages but I think they've taken that off their site, so who knows when it might finally surface. Apparently there are DVDs of it in Britain and Japan and all accounts are that they both suck really bad.
